Do you ever forget to take care of yourself?
I know that you are busy and finding time for yourself can be hard. But if you don’t, it won’t be long before you are operating from a place of exhaustion and just going through the motions.
According to a study at North Carolina State University, self-care is the active participation in enhancing the quality of your health.
Who doesn’t want to enhance the quality of your health which would in-turn enhance the quality of your life?
There is a belief out there that self-care is indulgent but the reality is that you can only sustain your physical and mental health when self-care is a non-negotiable priority. Taking care of yourself allows you to be the best possible version of you.
Self-care is not a one-time thing. It is all about creating new habits that can fit into your everyday life. The key is to start small to increase the odds of it being sustainable. If you try to do too much at once, you lower the chances of your success.
There are so many ideas out there on ways to add self-care into your days. Just google it or head on over to Pinterest for plenty of inspiration.
Here are a few of my favorite ways:
Feeding yourself the best foods possible: With our busy lives, it’s so easy to grab and go but most likely it’s not always the most nourishing foods. Taking a little bit of time to plan ahead for the day can make all the difference.
Make it a point to move every single day: Find ways to add more movement into your days. With the days being warmer, it could mean getting outside for a walk, playing with your kids at the park or trying out that new bike trail. Other options could be parking farther away from your destination or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
Sleep: While our bodies may vary on the amount of sleep we need, I think we can all agree that there’s nothing better than a good nights sleep. Sleep has so many positive benefits such as improved immune function, better weight control and clearer thinking.
Breathing & Meditation: Breathwork can mean different things to different people, but in it’s most simplest terms, it is the practice of using some type of conscious breathing technique to enhance physical, spiritual and emotional health. Meditation can be done many different ways but starting out you can try sitting in stillness and focusing on your breath.
Do something that you enjoy: Just the thought of doing something that I enjoy feels good. There are so many things that we have to do in our days but what about adding in something that you want to do? When I have days that feel like it’s nothing more than getting things done, I ask myself how can I make what I am working on more enjoyable? It could mean playing some music, doing paperwork outside on the patio or setting a timer and playing “beat the clock” on whatever I am working on at the time.
Get outside: Do you find that being outside rejuvenates you? One thing that I know for sure is that spending time outside helps me to stay more grounded and keeps me in a better frame of mind. I do some of my best thinking when I am out in nature.
Time alone: Spending time alone can feel uncomfortable for some people but I am a better person when I have time to myself. It gives me the chance to connect with myself, quiet the mind and prepare me for all of the activities in my life.
Gratitude practice: My current gratitude practice consists of using my Five Minute Journal. I use it morning and night as a reminder of everything that I have to be grateful for in my life. Using this has definitely been a game changer for me in the way I look at my day-to-day life. I am constantly on the lookout for new reasons to be grateful.
What most resonates with you as a possibility of something that you could add into your life? Keep in mind that while adding something new to your life may take effort at first, the benefits often long outweigh the effort.
