When I was recently given the challenge to take a two-week media cleanse, I had no idea what the outcome would be. Not only was I stepping away from Facebook and Instagram but podcasts, webinars and blogs too. Could I really do that? Could you?
Do you find yourself inundated by the media every day – losing hours of time to it? When we are being honest with ourselves, we know we should step away. But like me you probably think you wouldn’t want to miss something. I know I think “what if I miss something that would benefit my clients?”. Do we fear losing touch?
Taking two weeks off was very eye opening for me. The reality is we all have the same 24 hours in a day, and we get to determine what those hours are going to look like. I was ready for mine to take on a different look. You can make your day look like new too!
This decision to quit media for two weeks was in essence creating a boundary between myself and the media. Creating boundaries is not easy. You can find yourself lost and distracted in the sea of all things shiny and bright! However, when you make the decision to clear some of the clutter, in this case the media’s hold on your day, you will find that your world begins to expand.
Ask yourself these questions:
1. Is (fill in the blank) worth my time and energy?
2. Can I find empowerment in clicking the unsubscribe button?
3. Can I focus on what matters most in my life and have my actions reflect that?
What areas of you life could you use some boundaries? Maybe media is not the only place where you need boundaries. Creating boundaries around what matters most to you, protecting them from the outside world, can be the first step to creating a life you love.
So often we feel that we need to start out with a bang but it’s okay to start small when creating boundaries. Small changes create big impact when you desire change in your life. Could you use support with creating boundaries in your life?
