Recently, I had a conversation with a friend about how hard it can be to be ourselves. I knew I had my latest blog topic.
She’s the kind of friend who listens deeply and can point out so many parts of our conversation that would be “blog worthy.” I know who to call the next time I’ve been staring at a blank page for way to long!
The gist of our conversation was about how challenging it can be to be ourselves when we live in a world where we are constantly bombarded by social media where everything is perfect and everyone has perfect (or almost perfect) lives.
It’s hard to show up as yourself, to show the world the real you, when you are comparing yourself to someone else’s highlight reel. The comparison between your reality and their “highlights” can leave you feeling miserable.
Of course, our rational selves know that we are seeing the highlight reel of everyone else’s lives (only the best bits), but we’re still too unsure and uncomfortable to let others see the real us.
Does this sound like you?
The first step to showing up as yourself starts with giving yourself permission to be YOU. Every part of you!
You are enough just the way you are. It does not matter what you look like, how many friends you have, or any other judge of your “enoughness.”
Every one of us has gifts to offer this world, and that includes YOU!
When we’re focused on how we don’t measure up, it’s hard to see what’s right in our lives. One way to work on getting past this is to focus on being grateful for your individual strengths. If you’re not sure what they are, ask anyone who is close to you, and I bet you’ll be amazed at what they see in you.
We just don’t see in ourselves what others can see in us.
No one said that showing up as yourself was easy. We all fear being judged less than perfect. But you know what? In the words of Dr. Seuss:
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because in the end those who matter don’t mind and those who mind don’t matter.”
The journey I’ve been on over the past six years to connect to who I am and show up as myself has been the most challenging and rewarding part of my life. Just when I feel that I’m getting “there”, something else comes up for me.
We all can choose to fall back into our old patterns of believing that we have to be a certain way, or we can continue working on shedding more layers until we get to our true self who is just waiting patiently to meet us.
I’m choosing to keep shedding the layers knowing it will lead to more freedom to be me and allow me to live the life I’m creating for myself.
Do you feel challenged to show up as yourself? Let me know in the comments below how this plays out for you.
