In that blog, I shared how it’s easy to fall into the trap of defining our self-worth based on what gets done in a day, but we are so much more than that.
Recently, I came across a video from Anthony Ongaro (aka Break The Twitch) that has me thinking about productivity in an expanded way.
In this video, he shares how our current measure of productivity dates back to the Industrial Revolution. During this time, a worker’s measure of productivity was based on his or her output.
We may not be living in the Industrial Revolution, but all you have to do is look around you to see how many people still define productivity in a similar way. How much are we getting done?
Anthony discusses three essential forms of productivity. The first is productivity in work, the second is productivity in play, and the third is productivity in rest.
Play and rest?! By adding play and rest to our day, we will be more productive at work. I’m not sure about you, but he gets a big thumbs up from me.
So, let’s say that you’re onboard with this idea of adding play and productive rest to your life. You may be thinking “easy enough” until the guilt starts to come into the picture.
Taking time to play and rest can be challenging. Part of you thinks it’s a great idea, while another part thinks you’re losing your mind. Oh, how our minds don’t like being challenged by something different. Ugh…
What would productivity in play look like for you? Would you be out in nature, exploring a new area of town, playing with the dog, or taking time to go to that restaurant that’s been on your list (when your life was not so crazy busy)?
What about productivity in rest? We’re not talking about watching TV or checking out the latest Instagram stories (they’re fun, right?). Productivity in rest is more about letting the brain disengage. Whether you take a nap or meditate, you are intentionally letting your body rest and reset.
Are you thinking I don’t know what your life is like? You may be dealing with a personal health crisis, aging parents, financial concerns, etc. You don’t have time for rest or play.
You’re right! I don’t know what your life is like, but when you can step back to look at the big picture, adding play and rest just may help you to cope with life’s challenges.
