While the hubby was away on a golf trip, and my youngest visited a friend in Cali, I decided to do an experiment. I could have easily thought “how much can I get done while they’re gone?” but not this time.
Getting very intentional about what I wanted my “free time” to look like set the direction for the weekend. I didn’t want to be feeling any resentment that they’re away having fun while I’m stuck at home with the mundaneness of life. I could have so easily have gone this route.
I already had a beginner’s yoga workshop scheduled and a monthly lunch with friends planned. I decided to add on a pedi and dinner with my oldest son. Hey, if I was going to do this experiment, I was going to go all the way.
What was my experiment?
I wanted to get through the weekend without thinking about everything that I SHOULD be doing. Oh, how those “shoulds” get in the way of us fully living our lives. Ugh…
After a very enjoyable dinner with my son, a voice in my head piped up and questioned if it was okay to be having this much fun. Here come those “shoulds” again! My inner voice nagging me about what I “should” be doing. You guessed it - it had nothing to do with adding more fun into my life.
Do you find the “shoulds” getting in the way of your daily fun? It is so easy to listen to that voice, put the fun on pause, and feel the energy drain inside of your body.
I surprised myself and made the decision to ignore that voice in my head and continue with what felt good at the moment. So, I did one of my favorite things, I got into bed with a good book and felt like I had no cares in the world.
Did the weekend feel indulgent to me? You betcha! The “shoulds” could wait!
After my experiment, I realized (yet again) something very valuable. We all want to move forward in our lives. Adding fun into my weekend reminded me how there’s more to life than the everyday things we do. Having fun allows the mind to be more creative, and I bet I was more fun to be around. My mind was more present in what I was doing vs. obsessed with what I “should” be doing.
(Side note...when I think about how we all get so caught up in what we “should” be doing, I think wouldn’t it be great if there was a device that would zap us--gently, of course--like a dog getting too close to the invisible fence? LOL)
