Recently, I came across a book that grabbed my attention. The book is Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and into Your Life by Gary John Bishop. The subtitle really intrigued me.
I’m not sure about you, but I find myself living in my head waaaay too much. Do you find your mind running the show? Do you over-think things or over-analyze too much? How can we “get out of our heads”?
Among the many great concepts in this book, one jumped off the page for me...the concept of taking responsibility for our own lives. Okay, I get this isn’t a new concept, but the way he goes about it is (at least for me).
He breaks responsibility down into what you’re willing to do and not willing to do. The “not willing” can be just as powerful as the “willing.”
So, what are you willing to do? Are you willing to go to the gym? Are you willing let go of a friendship that no longer supports you? Are you willing to be true to yourself regardless of how uncomfortable it can be?
Choosing what you’re unwilling to do can be just as powerful.
Are you unwilling to remain in a painful relationship? Are you unwilling to be living a life that feels unsatisfied? Are you unwilling to put up with a soul sucking job?
Deciding what you’re unwilling to do is your way of planting a flag in the sand (and start taking back your life).
In order to change your life and take responsibility for it, you’ll need to let go of all of the nonsense that holds you back. You know...the negative stories, self-doubt, etc.
It may not be easy, but it’s one step in taking ownership of your life. It’s about facing your reality to get in touch with your life.
The truth is that life doesn’t stop while you’re deciding how you want to show up. Whether you play an active roll (or not), the show will go on.
The choice is yours whether you go with “I am willing…” or “I’m unwilling…” or both. What resonates the most for you?
